Whether you liked the answers or not, Star Wars: The Last Jedi resolved a lot of fans questions regarding certain characters of the franchise; Rey was not Luke’s or Obi-Wan’s daughter, Kylo does not turn over to the light side, and Snoke is not Darth Plagueis. While these may or may not have been the answers fans were looking for, Rian Johnson took risks and helped carry this franchise in a bold new direction.
However, one of the biggest question marks brought up in The Force Awakens has still not been explained. That major question is “Where are the Knights of Ren?” When I walked out of the theater after the first viewing, this was actually the big question I had regarding this film. J.J. Abrams set up this whole scene well that it begs the question as to where they currently are in this universe. To answer that, let’s dive back into the Force vision scene that Rey encountered on Takodona.
Rey’s Force Vision Was A Look Into Kylo’s Future
The scene that Rey envisions doesn’t really tell us who or where the Knights of Ren came from but rather what will happen in the future. After Rey touches Anakin’s and Luke’s original lightsaber, she begins to see things from her past and events in the future. While its not really clear if some of the scenes are past or future, The Last Jedi may have made things a bit more clear involving the Knights of Ren.
The Knights of Ren are shown in the pouring rain with Kylo Ren leading the charge. They appeared to have been in a battle as they are seen holding all of their weapons. As Rey starts to crawl, the scene immediately changes and many questions begin to rise. This crucial scene doesn’t answer any of the larger issues, but The Last Jedi may have given us more than we were initially hoping for.
Kylo Ren Is Poised To Have His Own Praetorian Guards
Wow what an elite force Snoke had. We’ve seen the Emperor’s Imperial Guards from the original trilogy but we never saw them in action. Yoda dispatched of them rather quickly as he was about to face off against the Emperor in Revenge of the Sith. However, The Last Jedi showed us who the Praetorian Guards were and how effective they are in combat. With their unique weaponry, Snoke’s Praetorian Guards meant business. Though Kylo and Rey bested them in combat, the Praetorian Guards certainly made a name for themselves in that incredible action scene.
Kylo should have his own fighting force for multiple reasons. One of the biggest reasons is because he needs someone to protect him. Snoke could obviously take on anyone he wants with his Force abilities but Kylo is much more immature and arrogant and will sometimes let his feelings get the best of him. The conclusion to The Last Jedi is a prime example of this as Kylo wanted to kill Luke Skywalker so bad that he prevented the First Order from advancing. Had Kylo not allowed his feelings get the best of himself, the First Order would have been successful in wiping out the remaining Resistance forces.
Another reason why Ren will need the Knights of Ren is simply because he’s not going to follow the path the way most Sith do. Darth Bane was the Sith Lord who created the ‘Rule of Two’ which had one master and one apprentice. The apprentice would eventually take on the masters role and then would seek out a new apprentice. The cycle would then start over.
Kylo Ren Doesn’t Believe In The ‘Rule Of Two’
The Last Jedi makes it very clear that Kylo may want to change things up a bit when he declares to Rey:
“Let the past die. Kill it, if you have. That’s the only way to become what you were meant to be.”
Though this quote in essence may suggest that Kylo wants to use Rey as his apprentice, I’d bet that this isn’t the case. He knows that Rey is really powerful and the two of them working together could be something special. With Snoke out of the way, Kylo foresees a future alliance with Rey by bringing order to the Galaxy. But since Rey turns her back on him, he’s now left to switch gears.
Here comes the Knights of Ren. The Last Jedi suggests that most if not all of the Knights of Ren were formerly Luke’s young Jedi. Luke even makes mention of this to Rey as he explained to her that when Kylo left Ahch-To, he took some of his students with him:
“I went to confront him, and he turned on me. He must have thought I was dead. The temple was burning. He had vanished with a handful of my students, and slaughtered the rest.”
I believe that this pretty much summarizes that the Knights of Ren are those students who left with Kylo. Why we haven’t seen them up until this point, is a mystery but one that I feel J.J. Abrams needs to address. As Kylo once stated that he will finish what his father started, Abrams needs to do the same with the Knights of Ren.
J.J. Abrams Will Utilize The Knights of Ren In Episode IX
There is no doubt in my mind that the Knights of Ren will be heavily utilized in Episode IX. They absolutely have to play a pivotal role in this film. If for no other reason, J.J. Abrams was the one who introduced us to them. With Abrams now signed on to complete the trilogy he started, Abrams should utilize them in a way that suits the story.
The conclusion of The Last Jedi gives us major hints that a future Kylo vs Rey fight is inevitable. With Kylo failing to bring Rey to the Dark Side, the stakes are even higher for him. Kylo Ren will need every one of his soldiers to be by his side to take down the remaining Resistance forces. How he goes about this is anyone’s guess, but I have a strong feeling that the Knights of Ren will certainly have a much larger role than we’re led to believe.
I believe that Abrams didn’t create the Knights of Ren just for his movie alone, but to instead set them up for a future film. To this day, we still haven’t had any novels or comics regarding these alleged assassins so it’s a good possibility that Lucasfilm and Abrams are holding onto them for the big finale to the trilogy in Episode IX.
But what do you all think? Do you believe the Knights of Ren will play a pivotal role in Episode IX? Sound off in the comment section below!
