Last year we were treated to many incredible superhero films including Captain America: Civil War, Deadpool, and Doctor Strange. Also of note was Bryan Singer’s final X-Men movie to complete the trilogy with X-Men: Apocalypse. I really enjoyed X-Men: Apocalypse as it was a fitting end to the story while also beginning to tell a new one.
While those films appeared universally loved, DC had it rough with divisive films such as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad. Though both of those films had their problems, I still praise director Zack Snyder for giving us an emotional and action packed ride that also brought in fan-favorite heroine, Wonder Woman. Suicide Squad on the other hand seemed to have too many cooks in the kitchen. This didn’t allow David Ayer’s vision to fully shine through as he was forced to cut out many scenes from the film.
This year appears to have a bright future ahead for the comic book movie genre. With even more comic book movies to come out, fans expectations are even higher. This list will mostly focus on what we as fans want to see in this movies and what we know about them thus far. That being said, here is my list of my least anticipated superhero films to my most anticipated.
#7. The Lego Batman Movie
Release Date: February 20, 2017
The Lego Batman Movie stars Batman (in Lego form) and is voiced by Will Arnett. The surprise hit movie of 2014, The Lego Movie brings back everyone’s favorite supporting character, Lego Batman. This film looks to be a fun family friendly movie with just enough humor that caters to adults.
With a great cast of characters including Robin (Michael Cera), Batgirl (Rosario Dawson), Ralph Fiennes (Alfred), and Zach Galifianakis as the Joker, this movie should be a wild and entertaining ride from start to finish. If the humor from The Lego Movie can be matched in this film, it should have no problem being universally loved. I mean who doesn’t love DC superheroes and supervillains in Lego form?
#6. Thor: Ragnarok
Release Date: November 3, 2017
Thor, Hulk, and Doctor Strange? What’s not to love about that lineup? Also returning is Anthony Hopkins’s character of Odin, except this time he’s been cast out of Asgard and somehow ended up looking like a homeless man in New York City. This film will continue the Marvel universe in a unique way giving us more of the cosmic world we all loved from the first Thor film as well as Guardians of the Galaxy. There’s also plenty of rumors that have surfaced about a potential Planet Hulk storyline that may in fact play a vital role to Mark Ruffalo’s Green Goliath.
Ruffalo has already mentioned that the film will be more on the lines of a buddy-road movie that will feature heavy in the story. Also, Cate Blanchett will be playing the main villain Hela and will certainly bring more destruction to Asgard. Besides Hela, Hulk, Thor, and Doctor Strange, Thor Ragnarok will consist of more heroes and villains including Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie, Jeff Goldblum as the Grandmaster, Karl Urban as Skurge, and of course fan-favorite MCU villain Loki played by Tom Hiddleston.
#5. Wonder Woman
Release Date: June 2, 2017
If there’s a film that needs to be good now more than ever, it’s DC’s Wonder Woman. Though fans and critics were at odds with the results of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, mostly everyone will tell you that the biggest positives of the film was Ben Affleck’s portrayal of Batman and of course Gal Gadot’s Amazonian warrior princess named Diana Prince.
Set in the World War I era, this movie looks to give Wonder Woman a proper solo film. What’s not to love about that killer theme song? First introduced in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Wonder Woman will look to carry her own and face an enemy that looks to wipe out the entire human race. Judging from the trailers, the action looks spectacular. With a great storyline and an actress who has played the character well thus far, Wonder Woman looks to be the hit that DC desperately needs. If this film does extremely well, you can bet that fans and critics alike will be excited to see DC’s version of the Avengers.
Release Date: March 3, 2017
Am I getting tired of the X-Men movies? You can say that. After seeing X-Men: Apocalypse, I feel like the series should take a rest and focus on a character like Deadpool and move forward. However, when you tell me that an upcoming film will feature Hugh Jackman’s final performance as the beloved Wolverine, I’m definitely on board.
The first trailer blew audiences away with it’s western/Neo-noir type of setting. The second trailer just recently released, gave audiences more of a glimpse at the story particularly with the young X-23. Based on the clever marking by James Mangold and Hugh Jackman respectively, along with the brilliant trailers, I can’t help but get a mix of a Last of Us vibe with a story that seems similar to what we’ve seen in Léon: The Professional. This movie looks to be a fitting end to one of the greatest comic book characters of all time. Jackman has thrived in this role and has continued to give it his all.
#3. Spider-Man: Homecoming
Release Date: July 7, 2017
Tom Holland’s Spider-Man was clearly one of the best supporting characters in Captain America: Civil War. With little screen time, Hollands has already embraced the role of both Peter Parker and Spider-Man. This is exactly the kind of high school trash talking Spider-Man we’ve been dying to see.
Spider-Man: Homecoming brings Peter Parker and his mentor Tony Stark back together. One of Spidey’s oldest villains will also be making a grand entrance. I am of course referring to Adrian Toomes aka the Vulture. The Vulture is played by Batman legend Michael Keaton and looks to bring a menacing presence to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Spider-Man: Homecoming is going for a John Hughes comedic style. If the trailers are any indication, I’d say that they nailed it.
#2. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
Release Date: May 5, 2017
A human abducted by space pirates? A green-colored assassin who’s adopted father is one of the strongest Marvel villains of all time? A strong alien who’s family was killed by Ronan the Accuser? Let’s not also forget about a talking raccoon who’s buddy is a giant tree who speaks few words! If I asked someone to name those individuals a few years back, would anyone have been able to identify those comic book characters? Sure comic book readers might have but now everyone knows who they are, thanks to the directing chops of James Gunn.
Guardians of the Galaxy was such a massive hit that a sequel was inevitable. In comes Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and will be bringing back the characters we all fell in love with and then some. Baby Groot looks to steal the show this time around as well as the introduction to the character of Mantis. This film can easily summed up in one word; FUN. I simply cannot wait to see what Gunn has in store for us this time around. The way he opened up the cosmic universe in the MCU was brilliantly done. I mean c’mon, Kurt Russel playing Ego the Living Planet?! That should be enough to get fans into their local movie theater.
#1. Justice League
Release Date: November 17, 2017
Can Zack Snyder, director of both Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, pull off what Joss Whedon did with his first Avengers movie? I absolutely know that he can and that’s why Justice League is my most anticipated superhero movie of 2017.
Say what you will about Snyder but he has a great visual flair with action and special effects. He may not be the best at storytelling, but I believe that Justice League will be the exception. It also helps that this film will inject some much needed humor to a rather serious-toned universe, if his previous movies are any indication. If Wonder Woman isn’t the film that could turn the tides of war, then perhaps Justice League will. I have faith in Snyder that he will bring us an epic spectacle of some of the greatest comics book characters of all time working together.
The Comic-Con footage that was released to audiences last year was met with full praise which is always a good sign. Fans are also wondering what will happen to Superman after his sacrificial demise at the conclusion of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Though the film is still in its post-production stage, we should expect a full trailer in the next few months or so. Justice League will bring together the DC team-up on the big screen that we’ve been impatiently waiting for.
