We all know how it ends. The Death Star plans are finally taken from the Empire and the Rebellion learns about the superweapon’s weakness, thus allowing them to go in and obliterate it once and for all. However, not all is known about this movie. Plenty of question marks still surround this film including what happens to all of the Rogue One team? How significant of a role will Darth Vader have? But the question I would like to focus on is what happens to the character of Director Orson Krennic who is played by Ben Mendelsohn.
Krennic is an interesting fella to say the least. As of now, we don’t really know much about this character other than that he apparently has a rich history with Jyn Erso’s father Galen. The beginning of the latest trailer shows that Galen and Krennic have had a history together. The trailer also makes audiences aware that Galen played a huge role in the creation of the Death Star. It appears that Galen and Krennic will have many scenes together in the film and it will be interesting to see the outcome that ultimately plays out.
‘Star Wars Catalyst: A Rogue One Story’ Will Give The Backstory On Director Orson Krennic
The new book that will be released by James Luceno (Darth Plagueis/Tarkin) titled Star Wars Catalyst: A Rogue One Story will look to shed more light on the background of both Krennic and Galen and why Galen has a debt to pay to Krennic and his army. I honestly cannot wait for this book as it will be released roughly one month before Rogue One hits theaters. Krennic looks to be the next big shot for the Empire. Here are 5 ways Krennic could go out at the conclusion of Rogue One starting from the least likely to the most likely scenario.
1. Krennic Lives To Fight Another Day
In my honest opinion, Krennic surviving to live another day would be the absolute least case scenario for this character. No matter how popular he may become with fans before or after this movie concludes, it would be much too difficult to keep him alive especially when we never see or hear of him in the original trilogy. It would be a challenge to explain to fans that Krennic goes off somewhere in the galaxy and escapes the war that unfolded on the Empire. He may also become the one who is responsible for allowing the Rebels to steal the plans. It would be a cop-out move if Krennic is able to escape as I truly hope the writers do not plan on keeping him around after this film.
2. Krennic Is Killed In Battle
Krennic dying in the heat of battle is probably the second least likely scenario in the film. It would be a complete waste to build up his entire character and then to see him perish at his own mistakes. Besides, we’ve already had Grand Moff Tarkin get obliterated on behalf of his own selfishness in Episode IV. Tarkin believed the Death Star could not have been penetrated and underestimated the courageousness of the Rebellion. Seeing Krennic die in battle or inside his own ship would just be too repetitious.
3. Krennic Is Killed By Jyn Or Galen Erso
Now we’re starting to get into the real meat and potatoes of plausibility here. As I mentioned earlier in this article, Krennic and Galen go way back together to when his daughter Jyn was only a child. There will be much correlation between both Krennic and Galen during the film. It would not surprise me if Krennic dies at the hands of Galen or his daughter Jyn. This all depends on the story Gareth Edwards wants to tell and it would be a fitting end to the character of Krennic if this were to happen. However, I find the last two options for Krennic’s death most logical.
4. Krennic Is Executed By Grand Moff Tarkin Himself
Tarkin as you all know was played by Peter Cushing in A New Hope. His selfishness eventually led to his death as Luke Skywalker put the final nail in the coffin by firing two proton torpedoes inside of the Death Star’s exhaust port, thus annihilating the entire space station in the process. Tarkin however has been confirmed to star in Rogue One in some form or another. There can be only one Grand Moff and it’s quite possible that the two come at odds with each other, fighting for their rightful rank in the Empire. It wouldn’t surprise me one bit to have a scene where Tarkin executes him in a very cruel way, in order to show who the true leader of the Empire is.
5. Krennic Is Assassinated At The Hands Of Darth Vader
The trailer gave us a few good shots of both Vader and Krennic conversing with each other. However, one of those shots featured Vader quickly headed right towards Krennic in what appears to be a very angry Dark Lord of the Sith. The most probable scenario for the conclusion to Krennic’s story would be at the hands of Darth Vader. Vader as we know from the original trilogy does not take failure lightly as he showed in The Empire Strikes Back that no Imperial Officer is safe. Everyone’s lives are at stake, especially when you work for the Empire.
Either Way, I’m Looking Forward To Director Orson Krennic’s Backstory
No matter how director Gareth Edwards and company decide to tell Krennic’s story, I’m sure it will be another amazing character to add to the Star Wars Lore. Think about it. There are only two individuals who could talk to Vader directly without having to deal with any consequences. Those two people are of course Lord Sidious and Grand Moff Tarkin. You can now add Director Orson Krennic to that list since the most recent trailer made it very clear that Krennic isn’t afraid to give orders to Vader.
The trailer showed Krennic stating, “The power that we are dealing with… is immeasurable.” It appears that Krennic is talking about the battle station known as the Death Star and may show a glimpse at Vader’s hesitation to use the full extent of the space station. We won’t know the context of this phrase until the film comes out but at least we can understand that there’s no hesitation with Krennic speaking directly to Vader.
So those are my thoughts regarding the outcome to Krennic’s character. What do you think will happen to him? Please share your thoughts in the comment section below. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is in theaters everywhere on December 16.
