5 Reasons You MUST See ‘Suicide Squad!’

After one of the biggest controversial superhero films that is  Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,  DC has since followed up with a fun, engaging, and energetic film.  Directed by David Ayer  (Fury/End of Watch),  Suicide Squad  tells the story of a ragtag team of villains who must work together to take down a threat who’s keen on destroying the world.  The plot is rather simple and a bit cliché, but it’s certainly a must see in the theaters.

Other than being a comic book film, there are many reasons to go check out this movie.  I will give you five of them.  This is also a spoiler-free article, so feel free to continue reading even if you haven’t yet seen the film.

1.  The Squad’s Origins

Let’s get this one out of the way.  As far as great characterization is concerned, this films has that.  While some may believe that the first twenty minutes of the film feels like a music video, I felt that David Ayer and his team put together a solid opening for these characters.  We immediately learn each and every one of these characters backstory’s right away.  Ayer didn’t waste any time to show audiences what these characters are all about and why they were placed in the cells in the first place.

Though there are some who’s backgrounds are more fleshed out than the others (Deadshot and Harley Quinn), overall the audience will grow with the characters and will root for them by the end.

2.  The Suicide Squad Team Dynamic

Speaking of the squad itself, the film does a great job giving us a taste of what’s it’s like to witness a bunch of villains forced to work together.  While they aren’t given much of a choice in the first place, the movie gives us plenty of scenes featuring the team taking orders and building a friendship to take out the enemies they have to face.  There are plenty of humorous moments to go around, and watching these characters work as a team is fun to watch.

In fact, there is one specific scene that has been briefly shown in the TV spots and trailers that show our characters hanging out in a bar.  The scene may only be about five minutes in length, but we as an audience learn so much more about the characters.  It’s a great scene that features no action, but it doesn’t have to.  It shows that the team cares about one another, even though they understand they are being used in the process.  It’s certainly my favorite scene in the entire film.

3.  Deadshot and Rick Flag

From the minute these two characters meet, you already know that these two will be going at it throughout the duration of the film.  Rick Flag is the leader of the squad sent by Amanda Waller (more on her later), who is tasked with watching over these criminals and to make sure none of them step out of line.

Deadshot and Rick Flag fight continuously throughout the film.  Whether it’s to prove that one is better than the other or to simply show that Deadshot usually works alone, the film does a great job establishing these two character traits.  It shouldn’t be a surprise to audiences that these two eventually form a friendship, even going so far as respecting one another.

4.  Amanda Waller

I don’t think Ayer could have picked a better actor than Viola Davis to portray Amanda Waller.  The woman is flat out ruthless and doesn’t seem to care about anyone else other than the mission.  As the film goes on, I promise you will absolutely hate this character especially at some of the choices she chose to make.  You may even find yourself asking who the main villain actually is.

Davis puts on a fine performance and shows us the cunning characterization that is Amanda Waller.  She single-handedly steals the show with every scene that she’s in.

Still haven’t made the decision to see the film at this point?  Well, perhaps the last reason will change your mind.

5.  Harley Quinn and The Joker

If there is one BIG reason to go check out  Suicide Squad,  this is the one.  After being introduced in the  Batman: The Animated Series  television show from the ’90s, Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) has finally made her big screen debut.  Robbie plays Dr. Harleen Quinzel, who was once a psychiatrist for the Joker.  Dr. Quinzel eventually fell in love with the Joker and thus found herself turning into the character fans know and love named Harley Quinn.

They chemistry between these two is fantastic.  Not only do they both pull off the same chemistry seen in  Batman: The Animated Series,  but the newest iteration of the Joker (played by Jared Leto), is spot on.  Leto brings us a much different version of the Joker.  Leto’s interpretation of this Joker is like combining the performances of Caesar Romero, Jack Nicholson, and Heath Ledger.  You can tell that Leto took bits and pieces of all three of those actors and rounded them up into one tremendous portrayal of the Joker.

This is in fact the first live-action Joker who has a love interest.  Sure we saw Nicholson try to get down and dirty with Vicki Vale (Kim Basinger), however  Suicide Squad  actually shows us that Joker has had a romantic relationship with a female for quite some time.  It works very well with the movie, even if the Joker is seen peppered in every now and then.

One of the biggest complaints of the film involved fans claiming that the Joker wasn’t in the movie enough.  Sure he doesn’t have a large role to play, but ever scene he’s in steals the show. The love story between Harley and the Joker pushes the story forward while showing the fans plenty of flashbacks in the process.  All of his scenes work well and doesn’t convolute the plot of the story one bit.

Final Thoughts

Though the film has its flaws, I found the movie as a whole to be very entertaining.  If you’re a comic book movie fan or just a movie fan in general, I highly recommend this film.  The movie does a fantastic job explaining all of the characters motivations and really draws you in hoping they all survive at the end (the film is called  Suicide Squad  after all).

Overall, the film continues to establish the DC extended universe moving forward.  The movie is set post  Batman v Superman  so it’s vital that you have also watched  Man of Steel.  Suicide Squad  was a ton of fun and I promise you will have a great time at the movies.  I will give the movie an 8.5/10 rating and will definitely be seeing this movie again!
