Top 10 Worst ‘Super Smash Bros.’ Items

SUPER SMMMMAAAASSSSHHHH BROS!!! How many of you remember hearing those three words for the first time on your N64 game console?  I’m sure most of you have.  Those three words have set the stage for players around the world to compete against their friends while also playing in various tournaments. To put it simply: Super Smash Bros.  on the N64 is a classic.  It was one of the first games to include multiple Nintendo characters in their own video game shared universe.  Think of this game sort of like an  Avengers  movie where it was the first time you saw all of your favorite Marvel superheroes come together on the big screen.

Super Smash Bros.  is a franchise that has catapulted into some of the best games of all time.  The first two are certainly my favorite, however the franchise has now spawned three more sequels including  Super Smash. Bros. Melee,  Super Smash. Bros Brawl,  and most recently  Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.

The franchise has given players plenty of memorable items to choose from including the Beam Sword, the Home-Run Bat, the Poké  Ball, the Ray Gun, and the all-powerful Hammer.  However, there are some items that can be rather annoying or just plain useless.  Some of the items on this list can be used effectively when utilized correctly, but usually comes across as being worthless.  Here are my “Top 10 Worst  Super Smash Bros.  Items.”

10.  Warp Star

The Warp Star is an item that can deal massive damage to the other player(s).  However what renders this item useless, is the fact that the player cannot control the direction of the star.  The War Star can inflict an extreme amount of damage to unsuspecting opponents, but unfortunately it’s power can only be used properly if it randomly crashes down on the other player(s).

9.  Food

Food is an item that is similar to the Maxim Tomato and the Heart Container.  These items are used to replenish your health.  The Heart Container is the best item which heals 100% of your damage.  The Maxim Tomato heals up to 50%.  The Food on the other hand, is completely random.  Some can a heal just a small percentage, while others could heal a larger percentage.  What renders this item useless to me is that players don’t have a lot of time to go after these items.  They disappear rather quickly and quite frankly, who has the time to run over and grab the Food when they’re busy fighting off opponents?

8.  Mr. Saturn

This item when used correctly, can be quite effective.  Mr. Saturn can deal massive amounts of damage to a players shield, but that’s all it is good for.  Other than disrupting a players shield, Mr. Saturn is rendered useless.  You can still throw him across the stage hitting other players, but the damage doesn’t outweigh the effectiveness.

7.  Flipper

Like the Bumper, the Flipper is an item that is good when placed in the correct spot on the stage.  Other than that, the Flipper is a pretty useless item.  The best areas to place this item on any stage is towards the edges, which makes it much more difficult for an opponent to get back to safety.  If in the right spot, your opponent(s) will constantly be knocked back and not be allowed to climb their way up to the top until it disappears.  Also, the Flipper deals very little damage when touched.

6.  Fan

This is yet another item that if used correctly, can be very useful.  The Fan is another item that deals massive damage to shields but isn’t good for anything else.  You can use the item to wack your opponent(s) senseless, however it only deals about 2% of damage per swing.  The range is also not very good for this weapon, so you have to get pretty close to your enemies in order to deal any damage.

5.  Spring

Between the Bumber, the Flipper, and now the Spring, this one has to be the most useless of the three.  The majority of the roster in the  Super Smash Bros.  games have double jumps which gives the characters a way to jump higher.  The Spring enables players to jump higher than normal, however it limits your movement in the air.  You can easily be hit by your opponent when launched in the air by one of the Springs.  This is an item that I don’t feel is necessary in any match.  If you want to jump higher and are in desperate need of an item, the Bunny Hood would suffice.

4.  Poison Mushroom

Unlike the Super Mushroom which enables players to grow much larger in size, the Poison Mushroom shrinks players down to the size of an insect.  What I hate most about this item is that it is very difficult to tell the difference between the Super Mushroom and the Poison Mushroom.  The Super Mushroom has a brighter red and has no eyebrows, whereas the Poison Mushroom has a slightly darker shade of red with eyebrows pointed down to showcase an angry appearance.  The Poison Mushroom also makes it very hard for players to find their own character, especially if one is using a giant screen TV.  This is definitely one of my most hated items in the games.

3.  Smoke Ball

This item is absolutely horrendous.  The Smoke Ball deals absolutely no damage to an opponent.  The purpose for this item is to make it difficult on all players.  The Smoke Ball casts difference colors of smoke across the screen temporarily.  This item is more annoying than anything else and should be left out of any match.

2.  Cloaking Device

The Cloaking Device is an item that is used to temporarily make a player invisible.  This item also allows a player to become immune to damage except for any of the knockback attacks.  What makes this item rather useless, is that it is difficult to find the player your controlling on the screen.  Like the Poison Mushroom, it can be rather hard to spot your character if you’re playing on a large TV screen.  I don’t know about you, but I’d rather see what I’m doing and the damage I’m inflicting on my opponents.

1.  Goldeen Poké Ball

Yes my friends, this is certainly the absolute WORST item you can possibly get in any  Super Smash Bros.  game.  What makes this item even more disappointing is the hype of finding a Poké Ball and realizing that Goldeen was inside of it.  Unlike the other Pokémon, Goldeen does absolutely NOTHING to help you in your time of need.  All she does is use Splash, and flops around like a fish out of water.  What a disappointing item this truly is.

So there you have it!  That’s my list of the worst items in any of the  Super Smash Bros.  games.  Did you agree or disagree with my list?  Were there any items I missed on this list?  I’d like to hear your thoughts in the comment section below and please share!
