‘Warcraft’ is Releasing a Prequel Comic. Is Legendary Pictures Taking a ‘Star Wars’ Approach?

Warcraft  has a tough mountain to climb.  To put it simply, video game movies have been atrocious. Super Mario Bros., Street Fighter,  and the most recent  Hitman: Agent 47,  haven’t lived up to fan expectation.  It’s almost impossible to give reasons why these film’s have failed time and time again. However, Hollywood keeps pushing forward with the release of one of the most beloved video game franchises;  Warcraft.

Duncan Jones, director of both  Source Code  and  Moon,  will be helming  Warcraft  as his next project.  This film is due to come out on June 10.  While fan’s are excited to see what Jones will bring to the table,  most people are however very hesitant on the outcome.  Will this film break new ground and FINALLY kick-start video game movies?  We still however have  Assassin’s Creed  with Michael Fassbender in the lead due out in November, but THIS is the year that will make or break video game movies moving forward.

Blizzard Entertainment will Release a Prequel Comic

Blizzard Entertainment announced the release of a comic that will be a prequel to this years movie.  It will be titled  Warcraft: Bonds of Brotherhood  and will delve into some of the lead characters that we will see in the upcoming film.  The graphic novel will span 112 pages and be released just three days before the film is out in theaters.  It will be written by Chris Metzen who is in fact familiar with the source material.  Metzen has previously worked on character voices portraying Thrall in  Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos  and Vol’jin from  Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne.  Here is the official synopsis and cover for  Warcraft: Bonds of Brotherhood:

“Discover how three of Azeroth’s greatest champions forged their first alliance, in the official graphic prequel to the Warcaft movie from Legendary, Universal Pictures and Blizzard Entertainment. In a fantasy action epic set decades before the film, the young and headstrong Llane, Lothar, and Medivh embark on a mission of vengeance that will forge them into heroes… the kind of heroes Azeroth will need in its darkest hour.” –IGN.com

Is Legendary Pictures Taking Cues from Lucasfilm?

It’s no secret that anything with the  Star Wars  brand, will get fan’s excited.  When Disney purchased Lucasfilm  for $4.2 billion, they also bought the rights to all future novels and comics that will be written and considered canon for this universe.  Thus novels such as  Tarkin, Lords of the Sith, Heir to the Jedi, Shattered Empire  and  Lost Stars  were born.  These novels and comic books are created to weave together the massive expanded universe that  Star Wars  is known for.  Books in between film’s are produced to enable fan’s to get a better understanding of certain battles that may have taken place on a distant planet, and to learn more about a character that may have just been hinted at in a film.

Either way,  Star Wars  will continue to produce these fascinating novels that will allow many fan’s to continue their love for  Star Wars.  This may be just what the doctor ordered for this new movie franchise in  Warcraft.  If this film is a hit, you can be sure that we will be seeing more books, games, and even comics that will give us more detail on certain characters.  Warcraft: Bonds of Brotherhood is just the first tie-in movie novel to hit the store shelves.  If this book sells well, expect more source material in the coming years.

Is this good for the  Warcraft  brand?

Absolutely.  It definitely can’t hurt the franchise that’s for sure.  What I don’t want to have happen is the same fear I have for  Star Wars.  I don’t want to have to read a novel or comic book to have learned what may have happened to a character in the past.  For instance, in  Star Wars: The Force Awakens,   C-3PO had a red arm which was never explained in the film.  However, a recent comic informed us that he lost it from a battle against some kind of creature and replaced his original arm with a red one.  This sort of thing bothers me because I wouldn’t have known that unless I read the comic.

I wound’t want something drastic to happen to a character in  Warcraft,  where I needed to have read about it in a book or comic.  I just want to watch a movie like I would any other film and enjoy it on its own merit.  The film should have a beginning, a middle, and an end with no in-between.  It’s alright to branch off into other stories, just keep the films in sequential order. Unless they decide to do any spin-off film’s like  Star Wars  and  Harry Potter  are both doing at the moment with the release of  Rogue One: A Star Wars Story  and  Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them  respectively.

I am very much looking forward to  Warcraft  and hope that it is a massive success for audiences. I want to see the video game movies do well which will hopefully give us other franchises such as Gears of War, Bioshock,  and of course  Halo.

Bonus! New Poster’s for Warcraft  have just been released!!!

These posters look incredible!  I really love the caption each of them have: “Two Worlds. One Home.” Each piece gives us something unique to look at.  Sure these characters may have been photoshopped on there, but the backgrounds are what makes each and every piece stand out.

So what do you think of  Warcraft  releasing a prequel comic prior to the movie? Will you go and purchase the book before the movie comes out?  Also, what do you think of these posters? Do they make you more excited for the film?  I’d like to hear everyone’s thoughts below and please share!
