SPOILERS for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice are ahead.
For those who went out to see Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice this past weekend, you may have left a little disappointed. No I’m not talking about the film in and of itself (even though a lot of people had issues with it), but some people left wanting DC to pull a Marvel and give us a post-credits scene setting us up for the future. While it would have been an interesting choice of a scene nonetheless, the fact of the matter is DC did not need one. Why? Because the film was already filled with enough Easter eggs to tease fans for the future of the franchise.
The Set-Up to the Justice League
To be honest, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice did not need or deserve to have a post-credits scene. There were far too many references throughout the entire film that sets up the DCEU. From Wonder Woman’s photo to the appearances of the Justice League members (The Flash, Aquaman, Cyborg), any more scenes setting up the future of the Justice League would have been overkill. Wonder Woman’s tease was by far the most important since she played a pivotal role in the film and will be the first Justice League Member not named Superman or Batman to receive her own standalone film in 2017.
The ‘Knightmare’ Batman Scene
Not only did Snyder do a fantastic job setting the stakes for what’s to come, but he also left plenty of references to the Justice League’s big bad; Darkseid. The ‘Knightmare’ Batman sequence gave us a possible look at the future seen through Bruce Wayne’s perspective, much in thanks to the Flash. We got a preview of what could be a destroyed Earth or Darkseid’s own world of Apokolips. We also received various shots featuring Darkseid’s own minions, the Parademons. These creatures will most likely be used heavily when Darkseid comes knocking on Earth’s door in one or both of the Justice League films.
Lex Luthor’s ‘Communion’
Jesse Eisenberg’s portrayal of the son of Superman’s arch nemesis Lex Luthor, also gave us helpful insight into the franchises future. Of course he was the one who created Doomsday after having used General Zod’s corpse as the main ingredient along with some of his own blood. We learned from watching the film that Luthor gained helpful insight from the ancient Kryptonian records and learned about the other planets and enemies that are out there.
Even though we didn’t see it in the film, the final scene between Luthor and Batman suggests that Luthor obtained knowledge of the destructive villain known as Darkseid. He states at the end of the film to Batman that the “bells have already been rung” suggesting that there’s no way of preventing his arrival to Earth.
A deleted scene released by Warner Bros. gave us more of an indication that Lex obtained valuable information aboard the crashed Kryptonian ship. You can check out the scene below:
We see Luthor in a pool of blood with a creature holding three ‘Mother Boxes.’ The creature in question who many speculate could be one of Darkseid’s New God’s named Steppenwolf. Another inclination is that he could be Yuga Khan, Darkseid’s father. Either way, the creature looks menacing and could perhaps turn up sooner rather than later.
DC is Not Trying to ‘Copy’ Marvel
DC films are a whole different ball game. They’re more dark with very little humor added to the mix. Marvel on the other hand has that ‘fun’ vibe to their films offering fans jokes when necessary and sometimes unnecessarily (I’m looking at you Avenger’s: Age of Ultron). Marvel has that streak going for them and it has continued to pay off. There films will sometimes have both a mid AND a post-credits scene like Captain America: The Winter Soldier did. Fans will feel disappointed if they decide to switch gears and with all the positive feedback from these post- credits scenes, Marvel will continue to produce them.
X-Men: Days of Future Past Post-Credits Scene
Disney isn’t the only property to include post-credits scenes after their big-budget films. 20th Century Fox had a BIG reveal after X-Men: Days of Future Past when audiences laid eyes on the soon to be villain of the third installment of this trilogy; En Sabah Nur a.k.a. Apocalypse. Fans will get to see the world’s first mutant in this years face off against Xavier’s X-Men in X-Men: Apocalypse.
Green Lantern’s Post-Credits Scene
Many fans quickly forget that Warner Bros. DID have a post-credits scene while trying to jump-start their own DC extended universe. However since the critical and financial reception to the Ryan Reynold’s Green Lantern movie performed poorly, DC pulled the plug right away and had to start over from scratch… again.
The Verdict
Warner Bros. looks to be headed in the right direction. With Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice performing well at the box office, they are doing all they can to dismiss their past mistakes. Even though Warner Bros. has decided against having a post-credits scene after their latest film, that doesn’t mean that they won’t change their mind down the road. They could very well have a scene after Suicide Squad this year but the odds are unlikely.
If there’s any film that SHOULD have a post-credits scene after, it would have to be next year’s Wonder Woman. This movie comes out just a few short months before the team up of Justice League: Part One. That film is set to come out on November 17, 2017 and what better way to tease us than to finally show us who the Justice League will be fighting against?
Those are my thoughts on why Warner Bros. decided against having a post-credits scene in their film. In a way they already did and in my opinion, I thought they did a very good job establishing this extended universe.
