Will ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Feature a Different Side to the Empire?

Star Wars: The Force Awakens  is nearly one month away till we find out where Luke has been all these years!  The newly established Rebels now known as The Resistance will be battling it out to the death against the First Order who were originally known as the Empire.  The First Order appears more deadly than ever now being led by Adam Drivers’ Kylo Ren and Gwendoline Christies’ Captain Phasma.  There are also a few other noteworthy characters we haven’t been introduced to yet and those would be Supreme Leader Snoke played by performance capture mastermind Andy Serkis, Max Von Sydow who’s character is unknown, and also Domhnall Gleeson who is playing General Hux. Those last three characters we have not seen any footage of up until this point.

Even though we pretty much know nothing about the story, there’s been wide speculation and theories concerning Luke turning over to the dark side, Finn becoming a Jedi, Rey’s relation to the Solo’s, or a certain annoying character from  The Phantom Menace  who may have been overseeing this entire story arc from beginning to end.  While I’m not here to give you a whole theory per say, what I am here to tell you is that we are about to see a different side to the First Order than we’ve scene in any of the  Star Wars  films prior.

As most of you know, George Lucas took the ideas of the stormtroopers and the Galactic Empire from the Nazi rule of Germany during WWII.  Hitler ran a very violent and authoritative Empire and slaughtered many innocent lives over the years.  The Nazis sought after the Jews as Hitler proclaimed the Germans to be an Aryan (superior) race and killed all of those who opposed him.  He wanted to wipe society clean and start fresh with only the Nazi rule in place.  The First Order in the upcoming film appears to be doing the EXACT same thing with Kylo Ren and Captain Phasma in command of the troops.  We have seen shots of Ren and Phasma burning down what looks to be a village.  Ren proclaims in one of the trailers that he “will show them the dark side” and that he will finish what Darth Vader started.

We don’t know exactly what he means by finishing what Vader started but one can assume it’s the eradication of the Jedi.  Since Luke is still alive, it would make sense that Ren would want to fullfill that destiny.  He is not messing around as he antagonizes Poe Dameron in the first official trailer while also appearing to slay someone with his cross-guarded lightsaber.  The First Order is full of evil and will be the primary threat facing our new heroes as they journey to find Luke Skywalker.

However we know that there will be at least one member who betrays the First Order and that character is Finn.  We have gotten plenty of glimpses behind this character even though we still don’t know much about him.  In the first trailer he proclaimed, “I was raised to do one thing. But I have nothing left to fight for.”  What was he raised to do in the first place?  Well luckily actor John Boyega may have given us the answer.

In a recent interview with  Entertainment Weekly,  Boyega discussed about his character Finn and how he is raised as a stormtrooper:  “He’s been taught about Luke Skywalker, he knows about his history. For him it’s like joining the army and then learning about one of the great enemies of your country. It has that effect on him. But in terms of the Force, and the magical stuff that happens, that is the point where Finn kind of questions what is what. What is the Force, what part does Luke Skywalker play in all of this?”

Just like how the Nazi’s living in Germany were taught that the Jews were evil and a menace to society.  The same can be said here for all stormtroopers that they are trained learning that Luke is the enemy and a major threat to their unit.  What changes his mind however when he leaves the First Order is a question that won’t be answered until the films’ release.  There are many reason’s Finn would want to leave but I have a feeling that Poe Dameron is one of those reasons.  Another photo from  Entertainment Weekly  gave us a look at both Poe and Finn together perhaps planning an escape from a First Order star destroyer:

Here, we can assume that Finn learns Kylo Ren’s evil plan and sees Dameron tortured by him.  This may be too much for Finn to handle so he plans an escape by saving both himself and Dameron.  We also know these two will meet again because Finn will be fighting for The Resistance before a major battle ensues.  That panoramic view from the first trailer reads that these two have previously met and are content to be fighting on the same side.  It’s a moment of friendship and shows that these two have been through a lot and want to take down the First Order at all costs.

We have yet to see anyone who fought for the Empire to actually feel sorry for those they are murdering including their own men.  However, there was one character in  Return of the Jedi named Admiral Jerjerrod who was openly against the Emperor’s command of blowing up Endor. Why?  Because his own men were on that moon.

In a few deleted scenes from the film, Admiral Jerjerrod hesitantly disagrees with his orders and says, “But we have several battalions stationed on the moon?”  The footage that I’m referencing starts at the 7:37 mark and continues till the end of the video:

As you can see, even though Admiral Jerjerrod accepts the order, he does not necessarily agree with it.  You can see the fear in his face as the countdown begins.  This shows a very human side to the Empire and gives us reason to believe that not everyone agrees with what the Emperor has in store for them.  Yes, anyone working for the Empire is evil, but some of these individuals have a family and care for their crew.  It would not surprise me if  Star Wars: The Force Awakens  had more of these types of scenes.  We already know Finn has quit the First Order, so could there possibly be others?

X-Men  franchise director Bryan Singer gave us a historically accurate film called  Valkyrie.  This movie showed us that not everyone who worked for Hitler agreed with his motives and were willing to risk their lives to somehow halt Hitler’s plan by killing him.  Unfortunately their plan did not work and were executed once they were found guilty of their crimes.

Even though these men did not succeed in their mission, they at least had the guts to fight back for what they felt was right.  If  Star Wars: The Force Awakens  could show us a peek inside the mindset of the individuals who work for the First Order, that would certainly be a sight to behold.  Could Max Von Sydows’ or Domhnall Gleesons’ character portray a new Admiarl Jerjerrod or a Finn type of character?  Only time will tell.

So what character(s) do you believe might betray the First Order other than Finn?  Do you think The Resistance could possibly have a spy who works for the First Order?  Sound off in the comment section below and please share!
