If you were one of the lucky few to attend this year’s San Diego Comic Con, then you were one of the first to see Warner Bros. release the first official trailer of the super-villain team called the Suicide Squad. Earlier the same day, fans were treated to a new trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and is arguably the best trailer of the bunch. However, David Ayer’s Suicide Squad was pirated online before WB decided they should just show the full trailer online. Warner Bros. was not at all happy about this as they were hoping to reveal the trailer sometime later however dedicated DC fans and superhero fans in general were not complaining when the trailer went viral. Check out the official trailer below! Like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice there’s a lot going on here and much to talk about. This will be the very first comic book inspired super-villain team up film to hit theaters and fans cannot be more excited. With Deadpool’s zany humor, fourth wall breaking, and a hard R-rating, this film will bring us a different dynamic to your typical comic book movie. There are a ton of characters in this film that many fans (including myself) have either never heard of or just aren’t familiar with their backstory. Some of these characters include Katana, El Diablo, Enchantress, Slipknot, and Rick Flag to name a few. I am super stoked for this movie even more so now after the trailer made its way online. With nearly every trailer being released I cannot help myself but continue to write so I’d like to share with you “5 Stand Out Characters from the First Suicide Squad Trailer.” #5. You Don’t F*** With Amanda Waller
“I want to assemble a task force with the most dangerous people on the planet, who I think can do some good.”
The second the trailer opens we see a bunch of people at a restaurant eating. Immediately we hear the voice of Viola Davis playing as Amanda Waller saying “Its taken some work but I finally have em. The worst of the worst.” Waller plans on recruiting this team of super villains to take out whatever enemy the government is currently facing. If they succeed, the villains can lower their prison sentence which is a way to motivate them to do her bidding. Waller continues to tell the men her reasoning’s behind her plan proclaiming: “If anything goes wrong we blame them, we have built-in deniability.” In other words, it seems like its a win-win for her because she won’t have to sacrifice her own men to do her dirty work plus they’re all expendable hence the name ‘Suicide Squad.’ When asked “What makes you think you can control them?,” she does not hesitate and responds saying, “Because getting people to act against their own self interest is what I do for a living.” Waller clearly does not mess around and her remarks show that she has been doing this for a VERY long time. She does not appear to be someone you want to piss off and is very dedicated to what she does for a living. #4. Deadshot has a family or presumably a Daughter
“So that’s it huh?… We’re some kind of suicide squad.”
The character Deadshot is played by none other than Will Smith. I like this casting however I feel as though I may have a hard time seeing him as a comic book character. Like Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Will Smith acts pretty much the same way in every film he’s in. He has that charisma to him that I like but I’m not so sure he has it in him to play a comic book character like Deadshot. After seeing this trailer nothing has changed my mind about his casting. He appears to be the character that says those one liners that stand out such as “Welcome to earth!” and “Now that’s what I call a close encounter!” from Independence Day. And of course from Men in Black you have “You know what the difference is between you and me? I make this look GOOD” and “It just be raining black people in New York!” My point here is that Will Smith is mostly a one-dimensional actor in my honest opinion. I like his films a lot but he plays the same type of character in pretty much every film he stars in. Suicide Squad doesn’t appear to be any different. He has quite a few lines in the trailer but the one that stands out of course is when he exclaims “Let’s go save the world!” This is a typical one liner quote from Will Smith which has me doubting that his character will be any different than before. Now back to his actual character Deadshot. His alter ego Floyd Lawton is an assassin for hire and is a great villain to add to this team of thugs. However what I believe will make this character stand out from the rest of the team besides the casting is that Deadshot may actually be the anti-hero of this group of villains. The main reason here being that he has someone he loves and cares for unlike the rest of the team (at least from what we were shown up until this point). Lawton appears to have a daughter who we see a few times throughout this trailer. Either the director wants us to care more for these villains or Deadshot is going to probably be the anti-hero like a Deadpool or a Punisher type of character. Quite frankly it would be hard to see Smith play the role of a villain which is why I feel that Deadshot may actually be the “good-guy” of the group. We won’t know his whole backstory until the film comes out but it’s nice to know that Ayer is doing his best for the audience to be able to know and understand that these characters for the most part are human and have lived their lives behind bars for a long time now. #3. Ben Affleck’s Batman will certainly be in it A few months ago a video was posted by a fan recording a scene from this film. Thanks to the advanced technology of cell phones and social media, the scene made its way around the internet. That scene was the one where we see Batman on top of a pink Lamborghini with Jared Leto’s Joker and Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn inside the vehicle. This is most likely a flash back sequence in the film before both Harley and Joker are arrested and put in prison. It’s nice to know that Affleck will at least have a small if minor role in this movie. With a film that has the Joker headlining as perhaps the lead villain , it’s almost a necessity to have the Caped Crusader try and track him down. Batman’s role is up for debate at this point but expect some light to be shed on his backstory between the two as I’m sure they have fought each other multiple times over the years. That explains why the Joker has the silver plating on his teeth from being savagely beaten from the Dark Knight. Having Batman in this film ups the ante even more and since Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice comes out just a few months prior, it will be great to see Affleck reprise his role shortly after. I have a feeling we are in for a real treat as this film will continue to establish this DC cinematic universe. #2. Jared Leto’s Joker is EXACTLY what fans want!
“I’m not gonna kill ya. I’m just gonna hurt ya, really, really bad.”
Why is this choice NOT number one you might say? Well let me explain. While we have seen multiple takes of this character from video games, television shows, and movies I am most certainly looking forward to this new iteration on DC’s most popular villain. Jared Leto’s Joker appears to be a crossover between Heath Ledger’s performance as well as Mark Hamill’s perfect voice-over in Batman: The Animated Series. Leto will no doubt bring us a fantastic acting display of the Clown Prince of Crime. However, the only part I’m not crazy about this character is his look. Trust me I promise to hold off my judgment until after the film but I can’t help but express my concern of all the tattoos he’s wearing. I’m just not a fan of the look plain and simple but if Leto can act the part (which he clearly can) then quite frankly I don’t care about his features. He won’t be shirtless the whole movie which leads me to believe that he will be wearing his go-to purple and green suit often which is shown briefly in the trailer. Whether Leto is the lead villain or not, I know we are going to be getting an incredible performance by him and I cannot be more excited to see him on the big screen. It’s been rumored that he will a Hannibal Lecter type of character which I believe is the best possible scenario for the Joker. Clearly he can’t possibly be on the ‘Suicide Squad’ doing good so I’m led to believe he’s either the main villain or used to track down one. Either way he’s going to get out of prison one way or another and will probably be the main antagonist in the first Ben Affleck standalone Batman film. #1. Harley Quinn Will Steal the Spotlight
“Hope ya got insurance!”
The character of Harley Quinn was first introduced in the hit tv series Batman: The Animated Series. The creators wanted to make another character to relate to the Joker and give him some kind of love interest in order to expand his character more. In comes Harleen Quinzel and is without a doubt one of my personal favorite villains from the tv show. For those who don’t know the entire back story of Harley Quinn it’s quite simple. She was hired as a psychiatrist to try and help relieve the Joker of his insanity while he was put in jail. Instead, the opposite effect happened with her becoming traumatized by the Joker’s antics. The Joker was able to sway her under his control which eventually led to his escaping from Arkham Asylum. Quinn became so attached to “Mista J.” that she wanted to work for him conducting his evil deeds. While Joker initially hated the idea of having her as a “sidekick” he also became more attracted to her as time went on thus making her one of his henchman. The character of Harley Quinn was done so brilliantly in the show that fans wanted her to officially be a part of this DC universe. As a result, comic books were written with her being a focal point. She was such a phenomenon that she became part of the ‘Suicide Squad’ thus placing her as one of DC’s most popular female characters. Now a days you can’t go to any comic book convention without seeing a person cosplaying as Harley Quinn. Sure the Joker will certainly be a highlight of this film but since we’ve never seen Harley Quinn on the big screen before I cannot wait to see Margot Robbie’s interpretation of the former Arkham Asylum psychiatrist. From what we see from the trailer, Robbie kills it as Harley Quinn. It’s almost as if the character jumped straight out of the show and into this movie. She is definitely on point with everything from her laughs, her looks, and most importantly her demeanor. Suicide Squad will be hitting theaters world wide on August 5, 2016 so expect more news and coverage from the set between now and then! After watching the trailer are YOU more excited for this film?
