SONY Possibly spinning their last web for ‘Spider-Man’

SONY is in quite a mess these days.  That may be an understatement.  With SONY in shambles right now due to the recent hacking, their most prized possession is still Spider-Man.  While we all wait patiently to find out what plans SONY has up their sleeves to try and fix all of this, it is however not too late to speculate what may become of our favorite wall-crawling hero.

Unless you have been living under a rock these past few weeks, everyone should realize by now that SONY is in MAJOR trouble.  Most of their private/classified emails have been made public and can be found all over the internet.  There have been recent reports about a possible  21 Jump Street/Men in Black  crossover movie, possible casting for their reboot for a  Ghostbuster’s  franchise, and what went down for their supposed  Steve Jobs  biopic.  However, the news that has gotten people all riled up over is about Spider-Man.

It has been widely speculated in the past that SONY was in talks with Disney/Marvel to try and figure out a way to bring Spider-Man back into Disney/Marvel’s possession.  There have been a lot of people who thought there was absolutely NO WAY that SONY would allow their character to be purchased from them unless a deal could be worked out.  It turns out that they have been in many heated discussions to figure out a way that could benefit both SONY as well as Disney/Marvel however no deal has been worked out thus far.

With the disappointing  Amazing Spiderman 2,  SONY has planned to try and rejuvenate their hero by adding spin-off films that consists of a  Venom  movie, a  Sinister Six  film,  an untitled female led superhero film,  and  The Amazing Spider-Man 3.  However, with everything that has been going on, all of these films are now up in the air.  Nothing has been written in stone and the company appears to be lost.

BUT, recent documents have just been released that show the possibility of SONY’s plan to REBOOT (yet again) a Spider-Man franchise.  The documents mention that they will not tackle an origin story since Spider-Man’s story has been told twice already in the past ten years.  The Daily Beast  has recently reported these findings.  Here’s what was said in some of the documents:

“To argue that there’s plenty of other superhero movies with levity in the marketplace, so why make more Spider-Man movies, would be akin to saying there’s no room for James Bond films because of all the espionage films and franchises that have come out over the years. There will always be room for this beloved, iconic hero.”

In reference to Spidey’s origin story, here’s what was stated in an email:  “In the next Spider-Man movies, we can’t go back to his origin story. Think of the 25 films in the James Bond franchise; just because a new creative team comes aboard, and breathes new life into a classic property, doesn’t mean the origin story has to be retold.”  Read More:  http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2014/12/13/exclusive-sony-hack-reveals-studio-planning-another-spider-man-reboot.html.

According to these manuscripts, SONY appears to have a future plan regarding their character.  However, we have been fooled before.  It appears that if Spider-Man stays with SONY, they will have to once again reboot Spider-Man with yet another actor to take over Garfield’s current role.  Does this mean that  Sinister Six,  Venom,  and the female led character spin-off films are not happening?  My speculation is that Disney/Marvel do not obtain the rights from SONY.  They will hold onto their character and will continue to move forward (without Andrew Garfield).  They will have to reboot Spider-Man once again without his origin story.

Quite frankly no one knows what the future of Spider-Man will be.  Will SONY allow Marvel to earn the rights back?  Or will SONY continue to move forward as planned?  If it were me, I would want Disney/Marvel to take over and reenergize new life into our favorite web-slinging hero.  It would be a shame to see Spidey go down like this.  At this point, we are all forced to play the waiting game.

So what’s your take on all of this?  Do you want Disney/Marvel to buy their rights back to introduce Spider-Man into the Marvel cinematic universe or do you want SONY to continue their plans for their franchise?  Comment below and share your thoughts!
