Who Will Die in ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron?’

Call me crazy, but I believe that a major character is due to die in one of the upcoming Marvel superhero movies.

In 2012’s Marvel’s the Avengers,  Agent Colson of S.H.I.E.L.D. was the man who bit the dust, but he was brought back in the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. television series; in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Nick Fury’s death was teased, but that was revealed to be a ploy and he played a major role in the movie’s second half.

In the trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron,  Ultron exclaims “There is only one path for peace…YOUR EXTINCTION!” This sets the stage for a wild ride and tends to imply that something big is going to happen to the Avengers. My initial question remains, however: will there be a death? If so, who could the casualty be?

The consensus of what I’ve read concerning this topic suggests it could be Hawkeye who dies. Jeremy Renner, who plays the character, was recently cut from this past summer’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

While rumors had once pointed to Hawkeye having his own movie, talks appear to have stalled. Marvel recently released its upcoming movie schedule through 2019 and it gave no indication that Hawkeye’s character will have a future with the Avengers going forward. Logically, this would seem to make him the most likely candidate to perish.

Although it’s not necessarily a foregone conclusion, there hasn’t been much discussion about another hero possibly being marked for death. Personally, I have my own wildcard: War Machine.

The character, played by Don Cheadle, will be in the upcoming movie, so there has been understandably little chatter about him potentially dying, but here are three reasons why I believe he WILL be the film’s fallen hero:

• As of this date, Don Cheadle is not scheduled to appear in any other Marvel movies.

• Marvel has not announced that War Machine will be featured in any of the future films after Avengers: Age of Ultron.

• War Machine has already appeared in Iron Man  1, 2, and 3.

Perhaps most importantly, I feel that War Machine’s death is imminent because this film will place a heavy emphasis on Tony Stark and the decisions he has made. We already know that Iron Man will be Ultron’s creator in the film, which is a departure from the comic book version that has Hank Pym (Ant-Man) building him but one that would be consistent with the synopsis of the film’s plot.

According to Stitch Kingdom, “When Tony Stark tries to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, are put to the ultimate test as the fate of the planet hangs in the balance. As the villainous Ultron emerges, it is up to The Avengers to stop him from enacting his terrible plans, and soon uneasy alliances and unexpected action pave the way for an epic and unique global adventure.” (To read more, visit Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ Official Synopsis | Stitch Kingdom)

So here’s my take: as we see in the beginning of the trailer, Ultron creeps in on the Avengers party with plans to eliminate them. Then, he sends in his robot minions to destroy the heroes and in that battle, War Machine will be killed; you can watch the full trailer here:

Iron Man’s remorse and guilt over the death of his best friend and partner will cause him to blame himself and seek vengeance, as the robots he had built to protect humanity become weapons of mass destruction. He’ll vow to destroy Ultron and the theme of blame falling squarely on Iron Man’s shoulders will be present throughout the film. He created these killing machines and if he hadn’t, Earth and the Avengers would not be in danger.

What do you guys think? Do you agree with me or do you believe Hawkeye or someone else will die in Avengers: Age of Ultron?  Maybe you feel that no one will die in the film? Comment below and tell me what you think!
